Grassroots Women’s Community Empowerment Toolkit

Toolkit | READ THIS IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN: Learning new methods from grassroots leaders for creating effective and sustainable approaches to community development and movement building.

HOW YOU CAN USE THIS RESOURCE:  Grass roots or community led, civil society and non-profit or non-governmental organizations can use this to build strong, connected leaders, partnerships, and movements able to tackle the governance challenges families, communities and regions face every day.

OVERVIEW: The Huairou Commission is a grassroots women-led network and social movement made up of thousands of urban, rural, and indigenous groups in 42 countries working to improve the living conditions, status, and quality of life of women, their families, and their communities. In 2021 Huairou launched a new global Leadership Development Program in response to members’ demands to systematically invest in strengthening grassroots women’s leadership – the foundation on which Huairou’s movement rests. The Program was informed by Huairou’s peer learning and mentorship approach that nurtures new leadership, sustains organizations and promotes a culture of collaboration that propels the movement.

The Grassroots Women’s Community Empowerment Toolkit includes six core tools and methods leaders of the commission have used:

  • Leadership Support Process
  • Community Mapping
  • Local-to-Local Dialogues
  • Monitoring Groups
  • Peer Exchanges
  • Grassroots Academies
