What We Do

Global or transnational challenges are typically addressed through institutional approaches such as committees, conferences of parties, communities of practice, or multistakeholder groups, all grounded in representation. However, these well-intentioned methods often inadvertently reinforce existing power dynamics, becoming susceptible to capture by particular interests or simply weaken, leading to shortcomings in implementation and impact.

Our Local-Global Coordination exploration examines the potential of network approaches to governance, working together with institutional ones.

Too often, participation processes are confined to institutional frameworks or consultations aimed solely at approving specific projects, without engaging people in implementation or driving meaningful reforms. This approach frequently perpetuates existing power imbalances.

Excluding people from the development process is not only unethical—it is a missed opportunity for society. When people are denied the chance to actively engage in positive change, we lose the benefit of their ideas and contributions.

This exclusion deepens the scarcity of trust, weakens social connections, and erodes social contract.

The challenge lies in creating channels for meaningful engagement—spaces where contextually informed ideas can emerge and influence how development challenges are addressed. These channels should connect ideas to opportunities, allowing key stakeholders to take action when needed.

At the Governance Action Hub, we aim to strengthen and amplify global efforts for governance and systems change through a network that connects people committed to making a difference. As an international NGO, we recognize the privilege and access we have, but we approach this work as individuals shaped by diverse experiences, united by a shared commitment to creating change.

We don’t lead this network; we support it. Together, we can explore new ways for people to exercise their agency and address pressing governance challenges.

Elevating Innovation and the Strategic Use of Data

To engage more voices in governance processes, we need to work with and through partners that have diverse roles and priorities in governance systems. We have identified two key aspects that are particularly useful for sparking conversations about new approaches to governance.

Strategic Use of Evidence and Data

We know that evidence and data are essential for informing action and building sound policy. But can they also play a greater role in shaping attitudes and fostering openness to change and reform?
